Effective Teacher: Connect to Correct.

A teacher is effective when students find learning interesting and rewarding; when students take ownership of their learning; when students reproduce learning, not only during the lesson but also long after the learning has taken place. A teacher is said to be effective when students find it easy to apply classroom experiences to their daily life' situations and decisions; when students are happy and excited during lessons. A teacher is effective when students spontaneously recall knowledge and skills obtained in the class to solve practical questions in examinations. A teacher is also effective, when he effectively manages the classroom situations to improve learning. A teacher becomes effective, when students are attracted to him because he gives them a listening ear and his arms are always open to receive them. Above all, a teacher is effective when the weakest student in his class is not left behind, stranded or stagnant.

One thing every teacher needs to be effective is the ability to CONNECT to his or her students. Any teacher who wants to succeed in his teaching career in this present age must be ready to develop a strong but professional relationship with his or her students. He must connect with his student emotionally and socially. He must gain their confidence and earn their trust by showing them love and empathy; he must be patient enough to listen to their complaints and views.  He must be ready to supports the weak and help the confused. He must have high expectations for all his students and must not write off anyone. He must provide godly counsels for his students and use reward and punishment moderately and appropriately. 

When a teacher is emotionally connected to his students, teaching becomes simple, seamless and highly productive. Moreover, when you connect to your students you stand the chance to correct their errors and misbehaviours, with little or no resistance. This is because students have confidence, and trust the judgement of those teachers who show them love and empathy.

In conclusion, I will like to submit here without any iota of doubt the first duty of a 21 century teacher is to connect to his students since corporal punishment is no longer fashionable. More importantly, it is inevitable if the achievement of our educational goal of producing a student who is worthy in learning and character is a must.

To prepare students to live in today’s interdependent world, teachers and educational administrators must weave international mindedness into the fabric of their school’s standards, instruction, climate, and assessment. Children and young adults must be given a broad and balanced education in order to fit well into the present day global village.

Some people advocate an international approach to schooling because they recognize that the economic and social world is changing. Students currently in school may, in the future, work for companies run from entirely different continents, owned and managed by people from different cultures. These young people are likely to experience their career not as a job-for-life but as a portfolio of jobs. Many of them will work in several different countries from cultures, with colleagues scattered across the globe.

Others advocate an international approach in response to the many difficulties that the world is going through, including the threat of international terrorism, the rise of racially biased right-wing political parties throughout Europe, and the degradation of the environment caused by our lack of awareness of impact of our actions. For these people, internationally minded education holds out the best hope for eradicating fear and suspicion and achieving peace, tolerance and global cooperation.

A third group is neither economically or environmentally, nor socially driven. These advocates believe that now, more than ever, international issues are an important part of modern life. International understanding should be included in the curriculum because it is, quite simply, a subject worthy of study.

Strategies for Improving Classroom Management

Teaching activities may be fruitless and frustrating if pupils are restless, noisy or distractive in the classroom, and the simple task of guilding the children to obtain knowledge, which should ordinarily be interesting may become herculeen and energy sapping, without effective strategies for managing the children's behaviours. There are five strategies  I discovered  several years ago. I've used them, they worked for  me and that  is why  I'm still using them. These strategies will work you if you use them effectively.

• Make your lesson students' centered: Ensure your students play active roles during lesson; ask the question, allow them to think out box. That will help them to use their energy in positive ways.
• Give enough but suitable class activities.
• Talk to your students: Talk to them individually, especially those who disrupt wilfully in the class. If you see them in the hall, cafeteria or hostel, don't hesitate to talk to them on their need for attitudinal changes.
• Teach from the back of the class: You may need to teach for a while from the back of the class if you notice that students are being disruptive in the class by talking, poking, crumpling paper etc.
• Don't forget to commend desirable behaviours: Give them award of excellence, praise them verbally and show you are proud of them.
